One of Nyíregyháza’s best-known buildings is a Romanesque cathedral with two towers located on the main square. The Church of Our Lady of the Magyars, which has been the co-cathedral of the Diocese of Debrecen-Nyíregyháza since 1993, with its double tower, proportions, structural perfection and pure style, is an outstanding work of domestic ecclesiastical architecture, a monument.
The exterior of the church – with its rich structure, pillars, and decorative elements – is captivating. In our country, we can hardly find a church equipped with similar external wealth. The height of the two huge square towers – which are three stories high
divides – 43.6 meters. Between the two towers is the richly decorated main entrance and the huge gable wall.
Entering, we find a variety similar to the exterior of the church, with all the beauty of the Romanesque style. The right and left pillars carry a cross vault consisting of six smaller fields and one larger field in the transept.
In the middle of the main altar, the huge crucifix that replaces the altarpiece has the insignia of the evangelists in its lobed ends. The marble front altar is at the center of the new liturgical space.
