The eclectic-style church with two towers and a Greek cross layout was consecrated on October 10, 1897 , when it was still part of the Munkács Diocese.
The first seat of the Diocese of Hajdúdorogi, founded in 1912, was Debrecen, but after the bombing two years later, the bishopric moved to Nyíregyháza.
It was built in 2011 on a masonry iconostasis covered with carved stones showing classical architectural forms. The icons of the monumental building are true treasures of Eastern icon painting. In February 2013, the Szent Miklós parish church received the status of co-cathedral. On March 19, 2015, Pope Francis founded the Nyíregyháza Diocese as part of the Hajdúdorog Metropolis, and designated the St. Nicholas Church as the cathedral of the new eparchy.
The complete renovation and interior painting of the cathedral was completed by 2023, so today we can see a unique architectural masterpiece decorated with beautiful icons, following the traditions of Eastern Christianity.
