Nyíregyháza’s oldest building and also its most valuable monument is the baroque Lutheran church, which is also an important venue for Nyíregyháza’s musical life. Lutheran residents who came to Nyíregyháza from Békés county in 1753 built the church between 1784-86, based on the plans of Giuseppe Aprilis. The church was consecrated on October 22, 1786. The tower was also built in 1796. The following year, in 1797, the first organ was also installed in the gallery.
Since 1928, the carillon consisting of 12 bells above the main entrance has been rung every hour. Until the beginning of the 20th century, the church tower signaled to the townspeople if there was a fire somewhere.
In 1910, the organ gallery was expanded in the church. Then the inside of the church was painted according to the plans of Gyula Benczúr.
The interior of the Lutheran church is impressive. The walls were painted with braid-style, stucco-imitating patterns. The structure of the church has three naves. The organ house adapts to the style of the baroque altar, pulpit and powerful columns. The painting expresses Christian symbols. The church can accommodate 4,000 people. The tower helmet is also baroque. The organ is two manual, pedal, with 33 solo variations. In evangelical terms, it is one of the largest organs in our country.
